Under the leadership of Dr. Igor Galynker, M.D., Ph.D., The Family Center for Bipolar Disorder is a unique partnership of mental health professionals, caregivers and patients who are deeply committed to providing the highest quality care to both patients and caregivers affected by bipolar illness. The Family Center is a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and volunteer advocates for patient and caregiver needs. Both multi-cultural and multi-lingual, we tailor interventions to the sociocultural values and needs of our patients.

Igor Galynker MD, PhD. Director

Dr. Galynker is Associate Chairman of Psychiatry, Chief of the Division of Psychiatric Brain Imaging, and Director of the Division of Biological Psychiatry at Beth Israel Medical Center. He specializes in Affective Disorders, including Major Depressive Disorders, Bipolar Mood Disorder, and Dysthymia.

Dr. Galynker was Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology, Psychiatry in 1993. He attended Medical School at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx where he is now a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry. His residency training in psychiatry was at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

Susan Tross PhD, Co-Director

Dr. Susan Tross is a clinical researcher with 20 years of experience in delivering and evaluating intervention programs in substance abuse, HIV risk behavior, and psychological adaptation to HIV. Her efforts have been supported by research grants from NIDA, NIMH, and the CDC. She is a faculty member of the Beth Israel Medical Center and the NYS Psychiatric Institute of Columbia University Medical Center.

At BIMC, she is: Co-Director, Bipolar Family Treatment Center; Supervising Psychologist, Addiction Psychiatry Service; and Senior Researcher, Chemical Dependency Institute. At NYSPI, she is: Research Scientist and Associate Director, HIV Center For Clinical and Behavioral Studies. At Columbia University Medical Center, she is Assistant Professor, Clinical Psychology in Psychiatry.

Dr. Tross has always been driven by her dual commitment to delivering clinical care to people in need and carrying out intervention research hoping to provide empirical data of direct use to providers.

 

Nancy Maruyama MD

Nancy C. Maruyama M.D has worked with the Zirinsky Mood Disorders Center since its inception. She began conceiving of the “patient” as the “patient and family” when she worked with Jimmie Holland, M.D. at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Maruyama specializes in the care of patients (and families) with co-morbid medical issues, Mood and Anxiety Disorders, and Hospice and Palliative Care. Specific interests include health behaviors in cancer and bipolar patients, and family-centered treatments for bipolar patients.

Dr. Maruyama is Board Certified in General Psychiatry with added qualifications in Geriatric Psychiatry and in Psychosomatic Medicine. She graduated from Barnard College, Tulane University Medical School, did her residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center, and Fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She has been on the faculty of Brown University School of Medicine and currently is an Assistant Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

 

Manuela Zisu MD, Child Psychiatrist

Dr. Zisu, was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1999. She did her residency training in Psychiatry at Beth Israel Medical Center - Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in New York City from 1994-1998. She has a Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from Saint Vincent's Hospital.

Claire Bernard

Claire Bernard is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works as a psychotherapist at the Beth Israel Medical Center and in private practice. She holds a Masters Degree in Dance Therapy and Creativity Development from Pratt Institute and a Masters in Social Work from Adelphi University. She has also trained at the Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy.

She has 25 years experience working with various patients and their families, with emphasis on Mood Disorders, Trauma, Crisis Intervention and Geropsychiatry.

Natalya Ogievetsky MD

Dr. Natalya Ogievetsky was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 2003. She graduated from Psychiatry Residency Program at Maimonides Medical Center in 2002 and from Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (Psychosomatic Medicine) Fellowship Program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 2003. Dr. Ogievetsky worked as an Attending Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor of St. Georges School of Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center from 2003 to 2007. Professional interests include treating patients with Bipolar Disorder, Depression and other mood disorders.

 

Psychiatry Residents

Beth Israel Medical Center psychiatry residents are supervised by the staff of The Family Center for Bipolar Disorder. They provide both psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment and support for patients with bipolar illness and their families.

 

Volunteers
